Maine is the northernmost state in the contiguous United States and is known for its rugged coastline, rocky mountains, and vast forests. The area that is now Maine was first inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Abenaki, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot. The first European settlers arrived in Maine in 1604, when French explorer Samuel de Champlain established a trading post at the mouth of the St. Croix River. The French and English fought for control of the region for the next century, with the English eventually gaining control in 1763. In 1820, Maine became the 23rd state to join the Union. During the 19th century, Maine was a major producer of lumber and shipbuilding, and the state's economy was heavily dependent on these industries. In the 20th century, Maine's economy shifted to focus on tourism, with the state becoming a popular destination for outdoor recreation. The state is also known for its seafood, particularly lobster, and its blueberry and potato crops. Today, Maine is home to over 1.3 million people and is known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities. The state is also home to several major universities, including the University of Maine and Bowdoin College.
